NJDOBI identifies four main steps in the resident producer licensing process. Atlantic School’s role is to help you complete the required pre-licensing education and prepare for the applicable licensing examination or examinations.
Resident applicants who do not qualify for an education waiver complete the approved Life and/or Health pre-licensing requirement for the line or lines they are seeking.
After the required education is complete, schedule and pass the applicable New Jersey Life and/or Health producer licensing examination through PSI for each line of authority sought, unless the examination exception applies because you previously held the same resident line of authority in another state and that license is either current or became inactive within the previous 90 days.
Fingerprinting is part of New Jersey’s producer licensing process and is completed as directed by the state.
Complete the producer license application using the current New Jersey licensing process after satisfying the required steps.
NJDOBI lists Life and Health as separate lines of authority and states that a resident applicant must pass the licensing examination for the specific line sought unless the same-line examination exception applies: the applicant previously held that resident line in another state and the license is either current or became inactive within the previous 90 days. PSI administers New Jersey insurance licensing examinations at authorized test centers and through remote proctoring. NJDOBI’s current Producer FAQ lists the examination fee as $47 per examination. Yes. Life and Health are separate New Jersey lines of authority. Candidates seeking both lines must satisfy the current examination requirements for each line and pass the applicable Life and Health licensing examinations unless the same-line examination exception applies. Atlantic School’s combined 40-hour Life & Health course prepares students across both subject areas.
Yes. NJDOBI lists separate 20-hour pre-licensing requirements for Life and Health, along with a 40-hour combined Life and Health course. Atlantic School uses the same scheduled Monday–Friday class week for all three options: Life-only students attend Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; Health-only students attend Monday, Thursday and Friday; and combined Life & Health students attend Monday through Friday. Monday covers the shared New Jersey law component included in each 20-hour line and in the full 40-hour combined course. New Jersey resident applicants generally must pass the applicable producer licensing examination for each Life and/or Health line sought after completing required pre-licensing education. NJDOBI’s current same-line exception generally applies when you previously held that same resident line of authority in another state and the license is either current or became inactive within the previous 90 days. An education waiver and an examination exception are separate concepts.
Yes. Atlantic School offers online options through instructor-led Live Zoom and Self-Study Life & Health, along with In-Person classroom instruction. For Self-Study, the online platform tracks required course progress and assessments; after the required coursework, chapter quizzes and final examination are successfully completed, Atlantic School verifies completion and issues the course completion certificate. Current classroom locations include Toms River, Hazlet, Edison and Parsippany. Check the Life & Health schedule for the location offered on each class date.
The combined pre-licensing education is 40 hours. Total time to complete the licensing process varies based on the class format and schedule you choose, PSI examination availability, fingerprinting and New Jersey application processing. Use the current class schedule and official PSI/NJDOBI resources when planning your timeline.
For a New Jersey resident applicant, NJDOBI states that the licensing examination for a specific line is generally not required if you previously held the same resident line of authority in another state and that license is either current or became inactive within the previous 90 days. Nonresident applicants follow separate reciprocity rules. Review the official NJDOBI producer licensing FAQ before enrolling or applying.
NJDOBI may waive the pre-licensing education requirement for applicants who qualify under its current waiver rules, including certain approved professional designations. An education waiver does not by itself eliminate the licensing examination; the examination is separately excused only when the applicable examination exception is satisfied. Use NJDOBI’s current waiver process before scheduling the exam.
PSI’s current New Jersey candidate bulletin says Life and Health candidates must present a current, valid government-issued photo ID and must also present their pre-licensing course completion certificate (electronic or hard copy) or an NJDOBI waiver. For a retake, the required certificate or waiver may be presented, or the failing score report may be used as specified by PSI. Review the current NJDOBI Producer FAQ before test day.
The current New Jersey state fee is $170 for an initial resident individual Insurance Producer application that includes Life, Health, or other major lines. NIPR states that this is the state fee only and does not include any NIPR transaction fee. Review New Jersey resident licensing fees on NIPR.
