Licensing Path

How to Get a New Jersey Property & Casualty Insurance License

NJDOBI identifies four main steps in the resident producer licensing process. Atlantic School’s role is to help you complete the applicable Property, Casualty or combined P&C pre-licensing education and prepare for the required examination or examinations.

1

Complete Pre-Licensing Education

Resident applicants who do not qualify for an education waiver complete the applicable 20-hour Property, 20-hour Casualty, or 40-hour combined Property & Casualty pre-licensing requirement.

2

Pass the Applicable Licensing Examination(s)

After the required education is complete, schedule and pass the applicable New Jersey Property and/or Casualty producer licensing examination through PSI for each line of authority sought, unless the examination exception applies because you previously held the same resident line of authority in another state and that license is either current or became inactive within the previous 90 days.

3

Complete Fingerprinting

Fingerprinting is part of New Jersey’s producer licensing process and is completed as directed by the state.

4

Submit Your License Application

Complete the producer license application using the current New Jersey licensing process after satisfying the required steps.

Licensing procedures can change. Use the official NJDOBI producer licensing FAQ and PSI New Jersey insurance testing portal for current state and examination instructions.

Common Questions

New Jersey Property & Casualty Licensing FAQs

How many hours is the New Jersey Property & Casualty pre-licensing course?

NJDOBI lists Property as 20 hours, Casualty as 20 hours, and the combined Property and Casualty pre-licensing requirement as 40 hours for resident applicants who do not qualify for an education waiver.

Are Property and Casualty separate licensing exams in New Jersey?

Yes. Property and Casualty are separate New Jersey lines of authority. Candidates seeking both lines must satisfy the current examination requirements for each line and pass the applicable Property and Casualty licensing examinations unless the same-line examination exception applies. Atlantic School’s combined 40-hour P&C course prepares students across both subject areas.

Can Property and Casualty be taken separately in New Jersey?

Yes. NJDOBI lists Property as a 20-hour pre-licensing line, Casualty as a 20-hour line, and the combined Property and Casualty course as 40 hours. Atlantic School uses the same scheduled Monday–Friday class week for all three instructor-led options: Property-only students attend Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; Casualty-only students attend Monday, Thursday and Friday; and combined Property & Casualty students attend Monday through Friday. Monday covers the shared New Jersey law component included in each 20-hour line and in the full 40-hour combined course. View the P&C class week, register for Property, register for Casualty, or choose the combined P&C course.

Do I have to take a state licensing exam after the course?

New Jersey resident applicants generally must pass the applicable producer licensing examination for each Property and/or Casualty line sought after completing required pre-licensing education. NJDOBI’s current same-line exception generally applies when you previously held that same resident line of authority in another state and the license is either current or became inactive within the previous 90 days. An education waiver and an examination exception are separate concepts.

Can I take the New Jersey P&C pre-licensing course by Live Zoom or Self-Study?

Yes. Atlantic School offers instructor-led In-Person and Live Zoom options and a Self-Study Property & Casualty option. For Self-Study, students complete the required Property and Casualty coursework and chapter quizzes, then complete the required course examination or examinations under Atlantic School’s completion process before a course-completion certificate is issued. Compare the available formats before registering.

Where are in-person P&C classes held?

Current classroom locations include Toms River, Hazlet, Edison and Parsippany. Check the P&C schedule for the location offered on each class date.

How long does the New Jersey P&C licensing process take?

The combined pre-licensing education is 40 hours; Property-only and Casualty-only are 20 hours each. Total time to complete the licensing process varies based on the course option and schedule you choose, PSI examination availability, fingerprinting and New Jersey application processing. Use the current class schedule and official PSI/NJDOBI resources when planning your timeline.

What if I already hold or recently held the same Property or Casualty license in another state?

For a New Jersey resident applicant, NJDOBI states that the licensing examination for a specific line is generally not required if you previously held the same resident line of authority in another state and that license is either current or became inactive within the previous 90 days. Nonresident applicants follow separate reciprocity rules. Review the official NJDOBI producer licensing FAQ before enrolling or applying.

Can New Jersey Property or Casualty pre-licensing education be waived?

NJDOBI may waive the pre-licensing education requirement for applicants who qualify under its current waiver rules, including certain approved professional designations for Property and Casualty. An education waiver does not by itself eliminate the licensing examination; the examination is separately excused only when the applicable same-line examination exception is satisfied. Review NJDOBI’s current licensing and education information before scheduling the exam.

What do I need to bring to the PSI Property or Casualty licensing exam?

PSI’s current New Jersey candidate bulletin says Property and Casualty candidates must present a current, valid government-issued photo ID and must also present their pre-licensing course completion certificate (electronic or hard copy) or an NJDOBI waiver. For a retake, the required certificate or waiver may be presented, or the failing score report may be used as specified by PSI. Review the current NJDOBI Producer FAQ before test day.

How much does the New Jersey Property or Casualty producer license application cost?

The current New Jersey state fee is $170 for an initial resident individual Insurance Producer application that includes Property, Casualty, or other major lines. NIPR states that this is the state fee only and does not include any NIPR transaction fee. Review New Jersey resident licensing fees on NIPR.

What instructor support is available?

Atlantic School’s In-Person and Live Zoom formats are instructor-led and include direct interaction, explanations and guided review. Self-Study provides flexible 24/7 learning with support available when needed. Compare the three study formats before registering.
