How to Get a New Jersey Title Insurance Producer License
NJDOBI identifies pre-licensing education, testing, fingerprinting and the license application as the main steps for a resident producer applicant. Applicants who qualify for an approved education waiver follow the waiver requirements instead of completing the standard course requirement; for Title authority, this includes New Jersey-admitted attorneys who receive an approved NJDOBI education waiver.
Complete 20 Hours or Obtain a Waiver
Resident Title applicants who do not qualify for an approved education waiver complete 20 hours of pre-licensing education through an approved provider. New Jersey-admitted attorneys may request an NJDOBI education waiver; see the official waiver note below.
Pass the Title Licensing Exam
After satisfying the education requirement or receiving an applicable waiver, schedule and pass the New Jersey Title producer licensing examination through PSI unless you qualify for NJDOBI’s same-line prior-state-license exception. That exception generally applies when you previously held the same resident Title authority in another state and that license is either current or became inactive within the previous 90 days.
Complete Fingerprinting
Fingerprinting is part of New Jersey’s resident producer licensing process and is completed as directed by the state.
Submit Your License Application
Complete the producer license application using the current New Jersey licensing process after satisfying the applicable education, testing and fingerprinting requirements.
Attorney education waiver: A New Jersey-admitted attorney requesting the Title pre-licensing education waiver must follow the current NJDOBI waiver process and submit a current certificate of good standing from the Clerk of the New Jersey Supreme Court. The education waiver does not waive the licensing examination. NJDOBI lists Title as a producer line requiring a licensing examination for resident applicants unless the applicant qualifies for the same-line prior-state-license exception. PSI’s Title-specific content outline currently lists 100 items, a minimum passing score of 70% correct, and 3.5 hours allowed. What do I need to bring to the PSI Title producer exam?
PSI’s current New Jersey candidate bulletin states that Title candidates must present a prelicensing education course completion certificate (electronic or hard copy) or an NJDOBI-issued waiver on the day of the examination. For a retake, the bulletin also permits the failing score report as described in PSI’s instructions. Candidates must also meet PSI’s current identification requirements. Can a New Jersey attorney waive the Title pre-licensing course?
A New Jersey admitted attorney may request a waiver of Title pre-licensing education using the current NJDOBI waiver process and a current certificate of good standing from the Clerk of the New Jersey Supreme Court. The current waiver form states that the applicant remains responsible for taking and passing the licensing examination and that the waiver is valid for 90 days.
How much does the New Jersey Title producer license application cost?
The current New Jersey state fee is $170 for an initial resident individual Insurance Producer application that includes Title or another major line. NIPR states that this is the state fee only and does not include any NIPR transaction fee. Review New Jersey resident licensing fees on NIPR.
